Type 304L Stainless Steel Characteristics
Type 304L annealed stainless steel differs from Type 304 only in its lower carbon content and in its slight increase in the chrome and nickel percentages. It has a high degree of ductility, excellent drawing, forming and spinning properties. Type 304L stainless steel is used extensively in the chemical, refrigeration, paper manufacturing and food processing industries. It’s also used for bellows, flexible metal hoses, spinning application, tubing and numerous other applications that require the unique properties it offers.
Like Type 304, Type 304L finds its larger demand in the soft tempers. In its annealed condition, the tensile strength is at 70,000 PSI minimum, yield strength minimum at 25,000 and its minimum elongation in 2 inches at 40%.
Because of its lower carbon content Type 304L is less prone to give trouble after welding due to carbide precipitation and its resultant corrosion. Type 304L possesses heat and corrosion resistant properties superior to Types 301 and 302 stainless steels.
